Sofia and Luca (SoLu “Empeku Epuan”) Foundation aims at equipping children and adolescent girls and boys in Kenya with the tools they need to safely navigate puberty and
grow into their full potential.
We help real people in real places, through effective delivery of goods, such as education books and materials, sanitary pads for girls, solar powered light bulbs, clothing and food for specific villages in need.
Our mission is to support them through access to education and to enable them to unlock their full potential. We want to encourage girls and boys to become self-determined young adults who will in turn shape their own future and the one of their communities.
We work diligently and carefully not to disrupt their culture, nor to accelerate their westernization. Our goal is to support them without disrupting their ancient way of living, values and principles.
The SoLu “Empeku Epuan” Foundation operates from the USA with support from the Masai Mara in Kenya. However, our initial focus is to provide for children in the least privileged areas first, which has been suffering with extended droughts and neighboring conflict for many years.
We have started providing books, pencils, educational material, plus every day needs, like solar powered light bulbs, sanitary pads for girls, clothing, shoes, soccer balls and basic food items. As we grow, we plan to expand our scope to fund scholarships to fund elementary and secondary school students in need.
Help us mobilize more people and translate their goodwill into donations. If you are a student, a parent, a teacher or anyone who cares about children, please join us in spreading the word.
We are in constant need of support in whatever form available. If you are a company that can donate products, or a logistics operator that could transport goods to Nairobi at cheaper rates, or someone who could replicate our funding kit elsewhere in schools, municipalities, corporate donors; please let us know.
To guarantee that our help reaches girls and boys with highest need for support, we benefit from the local support of Richard Markupa Mututua and colleagues from Masai Mara to identify, prioritize and define specific needs throughout Kenya.
All donations go directly to fund specific villages’ needs. We look for partners through the village chief appointed representative in order to listen to their needs and make sure all goods go straight to fulfill their children requirements.
After watching women walk for hours to secure water, see children sharing a pencil or not having books to study have made us reprioritize our own personal expenses and divert some of our more frivolous consumption into this project.
In Kenya, girls, boys and women risk life-changing violations of their human rights weekly including lack of government support such as education, health care and infra-structure, lack of basic nutrition, poor quality or hard access to water, sexual and gender-based violence. Such pressures seem insurmountable and we aim at helping one child at a time, diligently and constantly. We believe that small, targeted, cost effective approach is better; so we long for a day where lots of NGOs like ours can thrive and collectively make a very significant impact on poverty and its derivatives in Africa and elsewhere in the world. We have started our first step in Kenya. Wish us good luck and come back often.
As a family, we have used our own funds to kick start the foundation and the initial projects, set up the suppliers, the supply chain and the local infra-structure needed to make it successful. We have also committed to pay for all the foundation overhead expenses, freeing donation funds to go 100% to the target goal. Please feel free to choose an ad hoc, quarterly or annual donation amount.
